Introducing Tiny Bot. An autonomous, object avoiding robot.

Well, I can’t seem to help myself.  I built yet another obstacle-avoiding robot.  My wife’s eye roll confirms that I should probably branch out into other forms of robotics but there is just something exciting about creating something “almost autonomous”.  And it seems to keep my kids entertained for a short while anyway.

I’m especially proud of this one because it is smaller than my previous creations and is less modularized so it is slightly more rugged and can handle the inevitable bumps that will occur with proper testing/playing.

The brain of this robot is an ATTINY84 microcontroller from AVR.   It uses infrared to detect obstacles and has some neat little low-cost tank tracks for mobility.

  1. the chair leg thing should just be a bumper sensor. Bumper sensors are a great backup. I have built quite a few little bots, no matter how hard you try (to stay within a budget) IR’s and Sonars are only going to be ‘so’ effective. Plus a bumper is great for reacting to a moving obstacle.


    1. Excellent idea. I’ve seen some examples of tactile bump switches. I also saw a neat design using a long metal “antenna” that makes contact with a bare jumper wire when moved. The bump switches seem to be a little more sturdy and less likely to get bent. I may have to extend the levers some though. Thanks for the idea!
